Winter plantings are behind us and it’s time to remember the secrets of planting garlic in open ground in the spring.

We will tell you how to prepare soil and seed material for field work.

Planting time

Garlic is a frost-resistant crop, so you can start planting as soon as the soil warms up to 4-6 degrees Celsius. Planting is carried out in prepared moist soil, but not in wet soil. Otherwise, stagnation of melt water will lead to rotting of the cloves.

While the weather is still relatively cool, the feather and roots will actively develop, and as soon as it gets warmer, the garlic head will begin to grow.

Preparing the beds

We choose a sunlit area, on a hill, to prevent stagnation of melt and rain water.

In the fall, it is advisable to add humus, ash, and dolomite flour (if required) to the soil. It is better for legumes, pumpkins, or cruciferous crops to grow in the garden bed before garlic.

A week before planting, water the bed with a solution of potassium permanganate (pink) or a solution of phytosporin according to the instructions. Then loosen the bed with a rake.

Landing

When planting, you can add biohumus, ash or complex fertilizer to the furrows. The scales are removed from the garlic, the heads are separated into cloves and planted without preliminary dressing.

If in doubt, you can soak the cloves in a strong solution of salt and potassium permanganate (pink) for an hour.

Garlic should be planted on a fine day, rows are placed at a distance of 15-20 cm from each other. Cloves at a distance of 7-10 cm.

At the end of the furrow, fill it with soil to a depth of 2-3 cm, without deepening it too much, and add hay mulch.
