Onion sets planted in autumn have their advantages. During the winter they harden, become stronger and then grow actively and are more resistant to diseases.
In spring, onions sprout early, everything weak and sick dies, and a wonderful and tasty harvest grows, which is well preserved until spring.
In order to avoid repeating the same mistakes, experienced gardeners have prepared some explanations on the technology of planting this crop.
Preparing the sets
Buy small onion sets with a diameter of 1 cm, as anything larger may bolt.
First, disinfect the onion by soaking it for 40-50 minutes in phytosporin or a burgundy solution of potassium permanganate.
Next, dry the onions, because they need to be planted dry.
Site preparation
A month before the approximate planting of onions in the ground, you need to prepare a bed. Add 1 cup of wood ash or chalk per 1 square meter, because this crop does not like acidic soil.
Then add phosphorus fertilizer to the area: 30 grams of double superphosphate per 1 m2 or 60 grams per 1 square meter of regular superphosphate, or phosphorus flour.
Make rows in advance with a distance between rows of 20-30 cm and a depth of 4-5 cm.
Preparing the soil mixture
Prepare it in advance. Take plain garden soil, mix it with compost, add some ash and sand so that the soil mixture is loose and light.
For preventive pest control, add 1 cup of mustard powder and tobacco pollen per 10 kg of mixture.
Landing
The optimal time for planting onions is when the soil temperature is 5 °C and the top 0.5-1 cm of the soil layer is frozen.
Plant the sets thickly enough, because some bulbs will not survive the winter. This way you will get a lot of juicy and early greens in early spring.
