Many years of experience show that cold-resistant ornamental crops as such do not exist. Even evergreen thujas and boxwoods have to be covered for the winter.
What can we say about roses? Even if many claim that some bushes are not affected by frost, covering them will not harm them.
The main thing is to open the roses in time in the spring. We will tell you how to determine the optimal time for opening. Much here depends on the weather and climatic features of the region.
When and how to open roses
1. The daytime air temperature should be at least 4 degrees Celsius by this time. Usually all the snow melts by this time and the soil begins to warm up. Night frosts are allowed within -1 degree.
2. Initially, the shelter is only slightly opened, allowing the bush to breathe fresh air to prevent damping off. The frame and insulation are finally removed after the soil warms up to a depth of 30-35 cm, i.e. at a daytime air temperature of 10-16 degrees Celsius.
3. There is no need to be afraid of short-term frosts down to -4; other varieties will survive even at -7 degrees.
4. It is necessary to remove the cover when the buds swell and 1.5-centimeter shoots appear. Usually, flower growers open roses completely when buds appear on crocuses.
Important! If the spring is unusually cold and warmth alternates with cold and snowfalls, then the airing stage can last up to two weeks. There is no need to rush with the full opening of the bush. At this time, you need to ensure that water does not stagnate around the bush and does not flow under the shelter.
And lastly, it is best to open roses on a cloudy and windless day - there is less risk that the bush will get sunburned and there is a greater chance that adaptation will be easier.
