Fans of organic farming never tire of singing odes to such a popular fertilizer as compost.

However, it is worth adding such fertilizer to the beds only after it has fully ripened, reminds the expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh .

In this article you will find signs by which you can determine that you have mature, high-quality and not rotten compost in front of you.

First of all, you should pay attention to its consistency.

It should be uniform, loose and flowing. To make things easier, remember what well-dug soil looks like – standing compost is very similar to it.

If the fertilizer is ready to use, you will never encounter individual leaves, parts of stems, vegetable remains or food waste in the total mass.

The exception is small tree branches, but they are not capable of causing harm.

The smell is also important – it should resemble the aroma of damp earth or fallen forest leaves.

Finally, evaluate the color of the compost - it should be dark brown, similar in shade to black soil.
