Closer to spring, there is a rush around the stalls selling onion sets. Summer residents grab everything that the sellers offer them, giving little thought to the quality of the material.

We will tell you when you can start buying onions for planting and how not to make a mistake when choosing the so-called seeds.

Early purchase

You can save your nerves and time instead of standing in lines and instead of choosing an interesting variety, taking what is left.

Another positive aspect of buying early is that the longer the onion is stored at the seller's, the more likely it is to sprout prematurely or even begin to rot.

So, if you have somewhere to store supplies, it’s better to replenish them in advance.

How to choose

The normal size of onion sets for spring planting is 14-21 mm. There is less risk that the onion will go to seed. In addition, the bulbs themselves will grow large.

Bulbs of 8-14 mm in size will give poor shoots and the same harvest. Size 21-24 mm will drive into an arrow, and larger ones are better left for winter planting.

In addition, you need to pay attention to the following points:

  • variety (sweet or spicy, colored or white, large or small);
  • appearance (wrinkles, green shoots - all this should alert you and make you refuse to buy);
  • smell and texture (the onions should not smell moldy and should not be soft).

In addition, do not buy onion sets with trimmed roots, damp, peeled, with spots, dents and other damage.
