How to Choose the Right Curtains: Ask Yourself 4 Questions

Before leaving your apartment to go to a textile store to buy curtains, it is worth taking the necessary measurements.

But this is not all that needs to be done to choose the ideal option, says designer Yulia Tychino, an expert of the online publication BelNovosti.

It wouldn’t hurt to ask yourself a couple, or rather, four questions, and then you are guaranteed not to regret the choice you made.

1. What part of the wall does the window take up?

If the window for which curtains are selected is large and takes up almost the entire wall, then the entire opening will have to be covered, leaving no “pieces” of wall on the sides of the window.

If the window size is less than two-thirds, go beyond it by 20 cm, and fill the remaining space with a rack, shelves or other functional interior items.

2. What kind of curtains do you want?

If the goal is to completely block the flow of sunlight, buy blackout curtains across the entire width, and to eliminate light leaks, buy special Velcro that will help fix the curtains in the right places.

In the case of thin and translucent curtains, gaps are not your problem, because light will still enter the room.

3. What kind of cornice do you have?

For a ceiling cornice, curtains that are the width of the entire wall are suitable, whereas in the case of a wall cornice, the space for which is allocated directly above the window opening, the curtains can extend beyond the window by only 10-15 cm on each side (as an example, you can imagine a Roman blind).

4. How many layers are there on the window?

Fans of minimalism who reject the idea of multi-layered compositions on the window should make it a rule to go beyond the width of the window by 20-30 cm. Those who want to see tulle, curtains, and lambrequins on the window should think about how to “stretch” them over the entire wall.
