Herring under a fur coat has long been among the top popular New Year's treats. The salad can be called the same attribute of the holiday as a decorated Christmas tree.

For all those who love this dish and even those who are indifferent to it, the expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", chef Yulia Arkhipova suggests adding a little twist to the good old recipe.

To prepare the original version of herring under a fur coat, you will need:

  • 2-3 boiled potatoes,
  • 300 g herring fillet (choose spicy salting),
  • 1-2 boiled carrots,
  • 3 boiled eggs,
  • 1-2 boiled beets,
  • 1 large onion,
  • 150 g caviar (capelin or delicacy with smoked salmon),
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar,
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar,
  • And, of course, mayonnaise – add this ingredient to your taste.

The first layer of the salad consists of coarsely grated potatoes, which should be coated with mayonnaise.

Place the finely diced herring on top.

After this, prepare the onion so that it can be laid out as a third layer. To do this, chop the onion and leave it for 20 minutes in a marinade of vinegar and sugar diluted in a glass of boiling water. The solution removes the bitterness inherent in the onion.

Apply another layer of sauce, then add a mixture of grated eggs, caviar and the same mayonnaise.

We've almost reached the top: only a layer of grated carrots and mayonnaise separates us from it.

All that remains is to put grated beets mixed with mayonnaise on top and leave the herring under a fur coat in the refrigerator for several hours.

For reference

Herring under a fur coat is a layered appetizer salad made from salted herring fillet with boiled root vegetables and egg under mayonnaise in Russian cuisine and the cuisines of the former USSR.
