What a Teenager Should Be Able to Do on Their Own: Advice for Parents

Parental overprotection is harmful and will definitely make itself felt in the future. Children who go through this become weak-willed, dependent and often fall under someone else's influence.

Therefore, it is worth thinking about what exactly children should be able to do themselves. Let's find out using teenagers as an example.

Go to school on your own

You can give them a lift if it's on the way. But if the child wants to walk on their own, then you shouldn't interfere, even out of great love.

The same applies to sections, extracurricular activities, and so on.

Do your homework on your own

A teenager should know the school schedule and be able to plan his free time in such a way that he does not have problems with his studies.

But some parental supervision wouldn't hurt.

Choose yourself

There is no need to impose on a child a choice of interests, music, hobbies and other activities, and especially a choice of a future profession.

First of all, this concerns unrealized opportunities that parents try to “push” through their children.

Be responsible

A teenager must understand that his decisions and actions have consequences for which he, not adults, must be responsible. On this path, parents can only push to make the right decisions, but not make the choice for the child.

Defend your point of view

Even though at this age children do not have enough experience and knowledge to always make the right decisions, they must be able to defend their point of view.

You can't stop a teenager from developing this quality.

And of course, along this path the child must have the right to make mistakes and the opportunity to correct them.

Earlier we talked about how to choose colored pencils for a child.
