Some parents reproach their children if they are slow and shy.
Instead, we encourage you to become familiar with methods that will help your child become more confident while maintaining his or her individuality and ability to subtly sense the world around them.
Don't apologize for your child if he is shy around strangers and hides behind you. Don't call him "modest" in front of strangers, as he may perceive this as an inherent characteristic and become even more withdrawn.
Prepare for upcoming events in advance, tell your child what to expect, how to behave, etc. This will help reduce his nervousness.
Teach your son or daughter how to meet new people, both children and adults. Phrases to use when meeting new people will help them with this – tell them about them too.
Use games to teach your child proper communication. For example, have a doll tea party where your child can practice polite communication.
Set an example for your child - a child learns social skills by observing his parents and other important adults.
Don't punish your child for communication mistakes. Instead, calmly explain what he did wrong and help him correct the situation. Praise your child for his successes, this will help him feel confident.
