What is restless leg syndrome: a scourge that all pregnant women need to know about

Restless legs syndrome is common in pregnant women, but because not everyone knows about it, its characteristic symptoms are often attributed to banal fatigue.

What is restless legs syndrome

This syndrome has another name – Willis-Ekbom syndrome. It can be described as a condition characterized by muscle twitching, pain, itching and burning.

Sometimes women suffering from this syndrome describe it as an electric charge passing through their legs.

It is most often observed in a sitting or lying position and disappears (or at least weakens) after changing position or during movement.

Where does restless leg syndrome come from?

Unfortunately, scientists cannot say where the “roots grow from”. It is only known that Willis-Ekbom syndrome can arise as a consequence of such diseases as diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, neuropathies, etc.

But there are also cases when the development of the syndrome occurs independently of them - for example, pregnancy can provoke the development or worsening of symptoms.

What to do if you feel symptoms

Of course, you should see a doctor, because the syndrome – including in pregnant women – can be corrected.
