Japanese scientists have discovered that domestic cats react differently to the nicknames their owners give them.
The experiment consisted of several stages. A total of 80 cats living at home or in so-called cat cafes were involved in the study.
An audio recording was made to determine the cats' reactions.
At the first stage of the research, scientists asked the owner or a person unfamiliar to the cat to name the pet.
The voice was recorded on audio. Along with the cat's name, the participants were asked to name four words that sounded like the cat's name.
At the second stage, it was necessary to pronounce the names of other cats, and at the last stage, the person called the cat's name.
It turned out that 60% of cats responded to the sound they heard when the animal's name was pronounced.
The animal's interest was indicated by the movement of its ears.
10% of cats meowed when they heard their name.
Based on the results of the research, scientists concluded that cats do not simply react to human speech, but rather distinguish their name from other words.
It doesn't matter who exactly calls the cat by name, the owner or a stranger.
