The culture of communication is an amazing thing. Everyone talks about it, but not everyone has an idea.
Take, for example, the usual situation when a person answers a question with a question. The only explanation one can find is that only people of one nationality are allowed to do so. But this is more of a joke than the truth.
Let's try to find out whether it is possible or not to answer a question with a question, and if not, then why.
This is not a rare case. Such questions and answers can be heard when communicating with colleagues at work, friends or family members.
According to experts, it is more common to answer in this way in situations where the question is inconvenient and one would like to avoid a direct answer. This is the first.
Second, a person's response can be viewed as a defense, which in some cases is equal to an attack.
There is nothing original or good in such a reaction.
1. Just the opposite - the person who asks you a question was clearly caught off guard, or is trying to hide his confusion.
2. If you exclude the first point, then your interlocutor simply has nothing to say to you. Perhaps he simply did not understand what was wanted from him, is inattentive or does not know how to listen.
3. And one more serious point is an attempt at manipulation.
It would be more honest if a person admitted that he did not understand the question, found it unusual, or needed time to weigh everything and give an answer.
As a last resort, you can ask a clarifying question, but then you won’t be able to dodge – you’ll have to answer.
For reference
A question is a form of thought expressed in a sentence that is spoken (written) when there is a need to ask, clarify or obtain information.
