For many, fruit trees are not just a means of obtaining a harvest, but a memory of those whose hands planted them.
And when an old apple tree stops producing a good harvest, before cutting it down, they remember the person who planted the tree and the methods of rejuvenating the fruit crop.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", a scientist, agronomist and landscape designer, told whether it is possible to save the apple tree.
It all depends on the situation, or more precisely, the condition of the tree.
If it is damaged, there are cracks and hollows, fungus and other diseases are developing, and the tree has not produced healthy shoots for a long time, it is unlikely that anything can be done.
1. The hollow can still be sealed, but first it needs to be cleaned and treated for pathogens and pests.
Then you can fill the voids with foam or mortar.
2. Mosses and lichens do not cause much harm to the tree, but they indicate that it is growing in conditions of high humidity and lack of sunlight.
Sanitary and rejuvenating pruning will help.
It is important to remember that the latter is carried out in several stages and at the appropriate time of year and weather conditions.
3. But if the procedure did not give the desired result, then you can save the tree by grafting apple tree cuttings onto a young rootstock.
This method is considered the best when it comes to rare varieties of dying trees.
For reference
