Strawberries are not the most capricious crop that is grown by novice summer residents and experienced gardeners on their plots.
Everyone knows that it needs to be replanted periodically and the variety updated. But the berry harvest depends on more than just that.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", a scientist, agronomist and landscape designer, told how to increase the yield of strawberries.
Mulching is called the most important technique for increasing crop yields.
A layer of straw or agrofibre protects the berry bush from weeds, overheating and drying out of the soil, but most importantly, the berries do not come into contact with the ground and remain clean.
In the spring, the beds are mulched after the soil has been loosened and fertilizers have been applied.
Most gardeners make the same mistake: they stop watering their berry patches after harvesting.
But it is during this period that the flower buds of the future harvest are formed.
Therefore, strawberries need to be watered at least once a week until the end of summer.
Strawberries are demanding of soil composition. Therefore, fertilizing is carried out at least 3 times during the season.
The first in spring, after preliminary cleaning of the bushes from the affected foliage. A solution of urea (1 teaspoon per 10 liters of water) or mullein (2 glasses per the same volume of water) is added. Consumption is 1 liter per bush.
The second at the beginning of flowering (1 tbsp. nitrophoska per 10 liters of water, the same consumption).
The third after flowering using complex mineral fertilizer according to the instructions.
The berry bush needs to be protected from diseases and pests.
In the spring, after tidying up the garden bed, you need to spray the berry patch with a 1% solution of copper sulfate.
Before flowering, use Aliot, Fufanon-Nova, etc. against mites, whiteflies, and weevils. Industrial fungicides are used against diseases. During the ripening period of berries, use biopreparations Fitosporin, Baktofit, etc.
To have a lot of berries, you need to remove excess tendrils and leaves in time.
Pruning stimulates the plant to bear fruit abundantly, so you need to regularly inspect the berry bush in the spring.
When pruning leaves, you can cut out a third or a little more of the green mass without harming the bush.
This will not only make the berries ripen faster, but they will also grow larger.
Also, don’t forget to carefully prepare your berry patch for winter, and you’ll have nowhere to put your strawberry harvest.
