How to Grow a Fruitful Lemon in an Apartment: Start with Preparing the Soil
Contrary to popular belief, growing a lemon indoors, and even with fruit, is a completely feasible task.
True, the gardener will have to try hard to meet all the requirements included in the “rider” of this crop.
Expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh advises starting with the soil.
Since lemon is demanding, many plant growers decide to purchase soil for indoor plants labeled “universal” for growing it.
And this is their main mistake.
This plant requires a special composition with a certain structure, reaction (in the range from 5.5 to 7 pH), air permeability, moisture capacity, micro- and macroelements, etc.
If you want your indoor lemon to reach its full potential, look for special soil for growing citrus fruits in the store.
It must contain:
- high-moor and low-lying peat – it provides optimal soil structure,
- agroperlite, which is responsible for the air permeability and moisture capacity of the substrate,
- dolomite flour, which regulates pH levels and enriches the soil with nutrients,
- wetting agent – it accelerates the absorption of water by peat and thus prevents the substrate from drying out,
- complex mineral fertilizer, preferably prolonged action: macro- and microelements in such fertilizer are released in the required volume at each stage of plant growth,
- Trichoderma fungi, that is, protection against root and basal rot.
