It is believed that chokeberry, or black chokeberry, is best planted in the fall - thanks to this decision, the black chokeberry will have every chance of taking root and delighting its owner with a harvest next year.
The expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh answered popular questions from summer residents regarding the autumn planting of chokeberries.
It won't be difficult for you to choose a suitable place for chokeberry, since the plant is suitable for almost any soil. The exception is saline soil.
In addition, since the bulk of the chokeberry roots are located within the crown projection at a depth of up to half a meter, it exhibits tolerance to close standing groundwater.
If you are going to plant several plants at once, make sure that the distance between them is at least 2 meters.
In order for the “operation” you have undertaken to be successful, make sure that the planting holes are of sufficient size – they should be 60 by 60 cm, and their depth should be 40-45 cm.
The planting mixture for chokeberry is made from the top layer of soil and 1-2 buckets of humus, compost or peat.
In addition, you need to add 15 g of superphosphate and 60-70 g of potassium sulfate.
During planting, the root collar of the plant should be deepened by 1-1.5 cm, and immediately after the seedlings are in their new habitat, they should be cut, leaving 15-20-centimeter stumps with 4-5 buds.
