Inexperienced gardeners naively believe that the safety of the harvest depends only on the quality of harvesting and storage conditions.

In fact, you need to start thinking about this while the vegetables are still sitting in the garden. Especially if we are talking about the onion harvest.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told how to preserve the onion harvest until spring.

First, pest control

The main enemy of this crop is the onion fly. The insect can ruin your harvest plans if you do not take preventive measures.

The simplest remedy is to use a mixture of wood ash and mustard powder, prepared in a ratio of 3:1.

Secondly, cleaning and preparation

If you harvest onions correctly, the chances that they will last until spring become much greater.

Therefore, onions are not pulled out of the ground, but twisted and dug up with a pitchfork.

It is important to dry the onion and not damage the bottom when trimming the roots - leave about 8-10 mm.

Thirdly, proper storage

Onions are not stored in the refrigerator, but in a dry, dark and well-ventilated place.

Ideal for storage are nets, bags made of natural fabric, baskets or wickerwork.

It is important to store onions separately from other vegetables and potatoes in particular.
