If you take good care of old currant bushes, you can be sure that they will definitely please you with a harvest of large and sweet berries.
An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh listed special procedures with the help of which you will be able to force even the oldest currant to bear fruit with renewed vigor.
During the winter, while blackcurrants are dormant, they need to be pruned. Remove all old and damaged branches to stimulate new growth and improve air circulation.
In spring, when the bush is actively growing, it is important to feed it. Feed the currant with organic fertilizers, such as humus or compost - they will certainly improve the yield of the bush.
During the growth and fruiting period, blackcurrant requires a lot of water (especially during dry periods). Water the bushes regularly and generously to prevent the plants from drying out and preserve the harvest.
Weeds should be removed regularly to prevent them from competing with currants for nutrients and moisture. Remove them manually or use mulch to suppress their growth.
After flowering, lightly prune the blackcurrant, removing weak and overly dense branches. This will provide the berry bushes with more sunlight, which, importantly, will be distributed evenly.
