Summer residents and gardeners have long loved basil. The aromatic herb is used in cooking and home preparations.

In the garden, basil drives away some pests, and it has also been noted that if it grows next to tomatoes, the taste of the fruit noticeably improves.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told how to sow basil for seedlings.

When to sow basil

It has been noted that it is better to grow basil using the seedling method. The root system develops better, and the foliage also grows more actively.

Therefore, supporters of the seedling method should think about sowing this grass for seedlings in March or April.

The seedlings are transplanted 60-65 days after sowing and only after the last frosts have passed.

How to sow basil

1. The soil should be fertile, loose, light.

2. Large containers or individual containers (plastic or peat cups) are chosen as containers.

Much depends on whether gardeners plan to transplant.

3. It is essential to provide drainage to allow excess moisture to escape (perlite or expanded clay).

4. Sow the seeds in a small depression. There should be 3-7 centimeters between the rows. With the individual planting method, one seed is sown in one container.

5. Sprinkle the seeds with a thin layer of soil, water with warm water, cover with film and put the containers in a dark, warm place with a temperature of +24 degrees Celsius.

After the shoots appear, the containers are placed on the windowsill. Watering is carried out once every 3-5 days.
