How to plant and care for calicanthus: instructions for growing an amazingly flowering, fragrant and unpretentious shrub
Recently, more and more new, previously unseen plants can be seen in our gardens.
One of these “innovations” is a North American shrub called calicanthus, which, according to the expert of the online publication “BelNovosti”, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , is distinguished by amazing flowering, pleasant aroma and unpretentiousness in care.

So, to achieve maximum decorativeness of the calycanthus and abundant flowering, it is important to observe several conditions.
Firstly, planting should be done in a well-lit place: in the shade, the shoots can stretch out, causing the bush to lose its shape, and the color of the flowers can become less bright.
Secondly, the calycanthus needs fertile soil with a high humus content. Loams that provide an optimal level of humidity (without stagnant water and drying out of the soil) are best suited.
Be sure to protect the bush from strong winds and drafts – this is third.
Fourthly, it is worth remembering the need for sufficient free space around the plant so that neighboring plantings are at least 2 meters away.
Calycanthus is highly resistant to diseases, pests and adverse weather conditions, which makes it much easier to care for. Care includes:
- Regular watering for young plants and periodic watering for adults.
- Mandatory loosening of the soil around the trunk.
- Carrying out sanitary and formative pruning.
- Removal of basal shoots.
- Fertilization: in spring – organic, in summer – complex mineral.
- Winter shelter for young plants and mulching of the root zone for plants older than three years.
