Tomatoes are getting fat: an agronomist explained why this is dangerous and how to fix the situation

Some gardeners face the problem of fattening tomatoes, namely: thickening of stems, growth of large side shoots (especially of a rich color), increase in the area of the leaf blade, twisting of the top.

All these "delights" occur due to excessive fertilization with nitrogen fertilizers.

Because every gardener considers it his duty to feed his “native plants” heartily, without sparing fertilizers.

Remember the round children coming from their grandmother: "How can I not feed my grandson! He's always hungry!"

Agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh notes that overfeeding with nitrogen is fraught with:

  1. excessive accumulation of nitrates in fruits;
  2. delay in harvest delivery;
  3. number of fruits;
  4. tomatoes overfed with nitrogen and organic matter become more susceptible to diseases. They become less resistant to temperature changes and are often affected by fungal diseases;
  5. reduced immunity will lead to the appearance of pests.

The situation can be corrected with the help of a balanced diet.

Reduce the amount of nitrogen, increase potassium and phosphorus, temporarily reduce watering, remove side shoots.
