Many gardeners, even very experienced ones, make one mistake when planting onions, which threatens the loss of the entire harvest.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist and landscape designer, tells us what you shouldn’t do with onions so as not to lose the harvest.
The main reason for the death of onions is the violation of watering rules.
When watering onions, it is important to take into account the stage of plant development.
In the first weeks after planting, onions need a lot of water, but it should not stagnate in the garden bed, otherwise the root system of the plant will die.
At the stage of bulb formation, onions should be watered no more than once a week.
If the feathers start to turn yellow, it means that the bulbs have formed and watering should be stopped completely.
If you continue to water the onions, they will rot either immediately or during storage.
Another common mistake is watering with cold water. The water should be warm, temperature changes have a negative effect on the roots of the plant.
