How to Improve Clay Soil: Difficult, but Possible

No one will argue that clay is an excellent material for making pots and jugs, but as a soil for growing crops it is completely unsuitable.

However, the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh is sure that heavy clay soil not only can, but should be improved.

How can this be done?

When digging up the area, be sure to add a loosening agent to the soil. This can be peat or sand, or better yet, both, as well as compost or humus.

Do not forget to thoroughly mix the added additives with the soil.

Please note: Do not assume that adding sand alone to clay soil will solve the problem.

Quite the opposite – the result is a substance that looks more like concrete than rich loam.

Don't forget about the need to use organic matter. Compost, humus and green manure will attract earthworms, which will do the hard work for you, aerating and improving the soil.
