How to use sawdust in the garden and vegetable garden: benefits or harm

Sawdust is often used in gardens and vegetable gardens as mulch.

This material perfectly retains moisture, does not allow the soil to dry out, which means you can water the plantings less often.

In addition, the beds do not need to be loosened, since a crust will not form after watering and rain.

Another benefit of sawdust is that it protects the area from weeds and saves plant roots from temperature changes.

The material can also be added during digging. The fact is that, gradually decomposing and rotting, sawdust makes the soil looser.

But there are also some disadvantages to using such material on the site.

The introduction of sawdust most often has a negative effect on the acidity of the soil and its nitrogen content; it is believed that the material “takes” the last component from the soil.

There is also a risk of slugs appearing after a rainy night. Therefore, experienced gardeners recommend leaving boards next to the beds overnight to collect slugs from the other side in the morning.
