Experienced gardeners know that spring pruning can help you get a strong and light bush, and therefore a bountiful harvest.

An expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist, and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh explained how to properly carry out this procedure.

To begin with, it is worth removing diseased, dry, weak, frozen and lodging branches.

Once sanitary pruning is completed, you can begin formative pruning.

To do this, you will need to trim the shoots, leaving 4-5 buds on young gooseberries.

If the plant is 2-3 years old, it is enough to leave 3-5 well-developed shoots.

In mature bushes, you will have to remove branches that have crossed the 5-year mark. In this case, it is worth leaving 10-12 shoots of different ages on the bush. In old bushes, this figure can reach 20.

Don't forget: within a month after the procedure, it is worth feeding the plant, and if there was little snow and the soil is too dry, then water the bushes. At the same time, it is necessary to treat the gooseberry from diseases and pests.
