Contrary to popular belief, mulching plantings does not mean scattering covering material over your area.
An expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh said that as soon as spring comes, it is worth first of all getting rid of plant waste and weeding the flowerbed, removing the weeds.
After this, the flowerbed should be watered and complex fertilizer should be added to the soil - only after all these operations have been completed is it permissible to begin mulching.
An important rule: mulch should not come into contact with the trunks and stems of plants. Otherwise, it will lead to rotting of the latter.
But the thickness of the mulch layer is directly related to the composition of the soil.
If your site is completely loamy, the maximum layer should not exceed 2 cm. On light soils, this figure can be 3-6 cm (the exception is grass, in which case the mulch layer can reach 7-10 cm).
After the procedure is completed, it would be a good idea to install a decorative fence around the flower bed. A border, small boulders, processed logs, etc. will do for this.
There is no need to remove mulch from under trees, shrubs and perennials – you can simply add a new layer next year.
