Everyone knows that the first enemy of root crops is heavy soil. Beets and carrots do not give the most impressive harvests in such conditions.

However, if you have a plot of land with heavy loam, this does not mean that you can forget about growing carrots. There are options.

Preparing the ground

To harvest carrots, you need to properly prepare the bed for sowing. River sand, perlite or vermiculite, or peat are added to heavy soil.

In the fall, you can lay sawdust from deciduous trees as the basis of the bed; over the winter, it will rot and make the soil loose.

In summer, the beds need to be covered with plant remains so that earthworms can reproduce under the layer of mulch.

Selecting a variety

For such cases, gardeners are advised to grow carrots "Shantane". They say that this root crop can yield a harvest in soil as dense as asphalt. In terms of taste, it is not inferior to varieties growing in loose and nutritious soil.

The carrot "Nantes" will also please you with its harvest - it is juicier and softer, but it will be more difficult for it to grow in such conditions than "Chantane".

Gardeners have not yet come up with any other options for growing carrots in heavy soil.
