Raspberries can be sour due to lack of light and dense plantings: how to fix the situation

Raspberries do not always grow tasty and sweet.

If the harvested crop consists entirely of sour raspberries, the expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh advises to start looking for the cause.

Since raspberries are called a sun crop, the taste of the berries is often affected by a lack of light.

If the bushes grow in shaded areas, the fruits ripen small and sour. The situation is aggravated if the raspberry patch is an impassable thicket.

And if only replanting can help “saturate” the plant with sunlight, then thickening of plantings can be dealt with using a procedure such as thinning.

With spring just around the corner, don't forget about the need for sanitary pruning during the spring months.

The shoots should be tied to the trellis, leaving a distance of 8-10 cm between them, and then cut off the top at a level of 160-170 cm.

Don't forget about the need to combat undergrowth, which you will have to fight all season long. In summer, you can eliminate undergrowth by cutting it down with a shovel, and at the same time digging up all the weak and thin shoots.

After harvesting, it is worth cutting out all the shoots that have borne fruit, and in August-September, do not forget to cut off the tops of the young shoots.
