When and how to choose onions for sowing is a question that torments the minds of many gardeners.

An expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist, and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh believes that it is worth going shopping when the onion sets are just starting to be delivered – this way you will be satisfied with both the price and the assortment.

If you postpone the purchase until April, the cost of the seed will only increase, but the quality, on the contrary, will deteriorate.

As is known, all sets are divided into 3 fractions according to such a criterion as size.

Small specimens are those from 8 to 14 mm. They have few nutrients, which is why small sets will certainly lag behind in development for about a couple of weeks.

Experienced gardeners use such onions for winter planting, not forgetting to cover the beds so as not to freeze the onions.

The most successful option is considered to be the middle one (14-21 mm). It is unlikely that such sets will go into the arrow, but you will get large bulbs.

Large sets measuring 21 to 24 mm will most likely go into the arrow. They are chosen if you want to get greens.
