Summer residents often plant sunflowers on their plots, not so much to squeeze out the oil later, but to indulge in the seeds in their free time.
Many people later regret their decision and it's not even about the birds that flock to peck at the seeds. There are more tangible consequences.
We will tell you why you should not plant sunflowers in your summer cottage.
1. The root system of the plant is very powerful, and therefore it abundantly pumps nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium from the soil, and along with them moisture, even more actively than cereals and root crops.
2. If you plant several plants, they can soon create shade for low-growing but light-loving plants.
3. During its growth, this crop releases harmful substances into the soil, which is why even weeds do not feel very well in this place.
There is an opinion that planting sunflowers next to cucumbers is beneficial for the latter. Their roots are superficial compared to sunflowers, and therefore there are no problems for their growth and development.
At the same time, sunflower releases iron, zinc and silicon into the soil, as well as other elements that benefit cucumbers.
Tall sunflowers can protect cucumbers from strong winds and hot sun.
In addition, beans, carrots, radishes and horseradish tolerate sunflowers well.
It is better not to plant sunflowers with other crops. It is worth excluding the neighborhood with cereals, corn, nightshades, cruciferous plants and small greens.
Therefore, if the plot is small, it will be cheaper to buy seeds than to grow them in your own garden.
