Evidence has been obtained that a person's diet has a direct relationship with brain health.
In short, a healthy diet can prevent cognitive problems in old age, and more specifically, protect against dementia.
Scientists from Tufts University in the UK have proven that a healthy and balanced diet can protect against dementia in old age. However, you need to start eating right in childhood and adolescence.
The published findings are the result of research that has been conducted over nearly 70 years.
British doctors and scientists monitored 3,000 patients and tracked their health from the age of 4 to 70.
Those who consumed more vegetables and fruits, legumes and whole grains retained their cognitive functions at the highest level.
These people also limited the amount of salt, sugar and refined grains in their diet.
Of the volunteers with high cognitive ability, only 8% had a low-quality diet during their lifetime, while 36% had a high-quality diet.
Moreover, patients who demonstrated low cognitive abilities in old age had poor nutrition in 58% of cases.
They followed a diet, but only 7% of volunteers developed dementia in old age.
