So always add at least a small piece of vegetable.
A small amount of sugar can make onions very interesting. If you need to achieve caramelization, then feel free to add a small spoon of sugar.
If you just want to give the onion a nice color and great taste, then add less of the "secret ingredient."
This component is often added when frying onions, as it neutralizes any possible unpleasant taste and is able to cope with the hint of bitterness.
A pinch of powder will be quite enough.
