Here are some helpful tips for cooking rice.

Washing rice

Rinse the rice under cold water to remove excess starch. Rinse it about five times or until the water runs clear.

For sticky rice, such as risotto, rinsing is not necessary.

Ratio of water to rice. It is generally believed that rice requires twice as much water to cook. However, it is best to follow the instructions on the package, as different types of rice may require different proportions, says Yulia Arkhipova .

Here are some general relationships

  • For long grain rice: 1 part rice to 1.5–2 parts water.
  • For brown rice: 1 part rice to 2.5-3 parts water.
  • For wild rice: 1 part rice to 3.5 parts water.

Salt and spices

Add a little salt (to taste) to the water before cooking. You can also use various spices such as saffron, curry, cardamom, cumin, caraway, cinnamon or cloves to give the rice an interesting flavor.

Cooking time

  • For white rice: about 20 minutes.
  • For parboiled rice: 30–40 minutes.
  • For brown rice: 40 minutes.
  • For wild rice: 40–60 minutes.

Methods of preparation

  • In a saucepan. Bring salted water to a boil, add rice, reduce heat and cover. Do not lift the lid during cooking.
  • In a frying pan. Fry the rice in vegetable oil, then pour boiling water over it and cook as in a saucepan.
  • In a multicooker. Set the “Cereals” or “Rice” mode and follow the instructions.
  • In the microwave. Place the rice in a bowl, add water and spices, then cook.
