Despite the popularity of potatoes, not all cooks know how to properly prepare dishes that include this ingredient.
Expert of the online publication BelNovosti, chef Yulia Arkhipova, shared advice on what not to do when cooking this vegetable.
Potatoes should be placed in already boiling water to preserve their taste and nutritional properties. This is because cold water can wash out starch and vitamins from the tubers, making the potatoes less tasty and nutritious.
If you put the potatoes in boiling water, the temperature difference will cause the starch to remain in place, and the dish will turn out crumbly and not watery.
Adding salt slows down the cooking process. If you don't want the tubers to take too long to cook and end up with mashed potatoes, add salt at the end of cooking.
Too much water leads to the fact that the nutrient content of potatoes decreases several times. The ideal water level is when it covers the potatoes by 1-2 cm.
Overcooked potatoes can lose their taste and nutrients. Therefore, it is important to monitor the cooking time. Young tubers are cooked for 15-20 minutes, and old ones - 25-30 minutes.
