There is a simple tip on how to remove bitterness from onions. The vegetable should be immersed in boiling water for 5 seconds (no more). If you keep it in the liquid for too long, it will not crunch. Then throw the onion into a colander.
Vinegar can be replaced with the juice of three lemons, and the amount of sugar can be increased to 3 teaspoons per onion. Another ingredient that will not spoil the marinade is cloves.
