There should be twice as much water as rice: is this really true?

Anyone who has ever tried to cook rice is familiar with the universal rule.

It states that there should be twice as much water in the pan as rice grains, and the cooking process takes 20 minutes.

However, in reality, the amount of water, as well as the time, depends directly on what type of rice you have chosen to prepare the side dish.

So, if you cook long rice, you will need 450 ml of water for 200 g of grain. It will be ready in 20 minutes.

If we are talking about short-grain rice, for the same number of grains you will need 100 ml less water – exactly 350 ml.

In this case, the cooking time will take only 15 minutes.

200g of brown rice needs 500ml of liquid, while wild rice needs 550ml.

In both cases, the side dish will have to be cooked for a full 50 minutes.
