"You'll Never Achieve Anything": Why Parents Say This and What Kids Can Do About It

Even as adults, children continue to receive moral teachings from their parents.

Sometimes they are filled with care and affection, and sometimes they sound completely different.

Today we propose to analyze one of the latest cases: when you hear from your parents the words that you can’t do anything and won’t achieve anything, that you are unsuccessful and untalented, that you won’t succeed and in the end you will work as a janitor or a cleaning lady.

Why do parents say this?

At the root of all such statements is subconscious parental envy and dissatisfaction with one’s own life.

This is especially acute when children are ahead of their parents in something or achieve results that adults were unable to achieve.

What can this lead to?

As an adult, a person will be afraid to bring things to completion. Despite outstanding successes and great opportunities, he may stop right before the end of the task, unconsciously trying to protect his parents from unpleasant experiences.

What to do

Try to distance yourself from your parents during the period when you are trying to achieve a goal that is important to you.

Share the happiness of victories and successes with those who are able to sincerely rejoice for you, and you can tell your parents when the goal has already been achieved. By the way, you shouldn't count on congratulations.

How to communicate with parents

If the adults in your life who matter to you start belittling your successes again, tell them that you can do it, that you know what you're doing, and that you enjoy what you do. "Thank you for your concern, but I believe in myself," should disarm them.
