Can small children be given honey: this product is dangerous for infants

Unlike adults, infants under one year of age are strictly prohibited from consuming honey.

Why young children should not have honey

The main reason why honey is banned for young children is the bacteria Clostridium botulinum contained in this product.

They are capable of producing a toxin in the child's colon.

Since the baby's digestive system is still developing during the first year of life, it is therefore immature and cannot cope with these bacteria.

As a result, the baby may develop "infant botulism," which is characterized by constipation, poor feeding, lethargy, and decreased muscle tone.

When the toxin enters the bloodstream, it disrupts neuromuscular transmission processes and the child's muscles responsible for swallowing and breathing fail. The result is often death.

The good news is that infant botulism is rare, and honey-induced botulism is even rarer.

Every year, about 5,000 cases are registered worldwide, and experts estimate that only 15% of them are related to honey consumption.

To keep your child safe, do not give him honey and check food labels.
