The child is afraid of loud sounds: is this normal

Fear of loud sounds is an innate fear. By the way, there are only two of them, the second is the fear of falling.

Therefore, it is safe to say that a child’s behavior when he gets scared, tries to hide, covers his ears, or starts crying because of a sudden noise is absolutely normal.

On average, by the age of 1.5-2 years, this fear dulls, as the baby becomes more “experienced” and understands which loud sounds are harmless.

But this is not always the case: some children (we are talking mainly about anxious and easily hurt children) continue to be afraid of loud sounds until about 3 years of age.

When discussing this topic, it is important to note that there is a difference between the fear of loud and sudden sounds and the fear of a noisy environment, such as a playground.

If a child aged 3 years or older finds himself in a similar situation, but continues to clearly demonstrate fear, this indicates that he needs a consultation with a child psychologist.

The specialist will find the reason that gave rise to the fear and, accordingly, will help you cope with it.

And finally: sometimes persistent fears are a symptom of autism spectrum disorders, so in addition to a psychologist, it is worth visiting a pediatrician and a child neurologist.
