Why does a child hiccup: 5 reasons

It is generally accepted that hiccups appear in children when they are cold.

This may be true, but cold is far from the only reason for hiccups.

Hiccups in a baby can be caused by swallowing air, and both breastfed and formula-fed babies are not immune to this.

Air can get in due to improper latching on to the breast, feeding immediately after intense crying, or an excessively large hole in the nipple.

Another factor that can trigger hiccups is overeating. When the stomach is full, it can put pressure on the diaphragm, which in fact causes involuntary movements of the diaphragm.

In addition, the occurrence of hiccups is influenced by the nutritional characteristics of the nursing mother.

Triggering foods include coffee, soda, vegetables and fruits that contain coarse fiber, chocolate, peanuts, citrus fruits and soy.

Finally, coughing and vibration of the diaphragm, leading to hiccups, are observed when the child is forced to inhale polluted air or very strong odors.
