Who suffers from mental disorders more often – “owls” or “larks”: scientists answer

People are divided into “owls” and “larks” according to their chronotype, but this is no longer news.

Scientists set out to study the impact of this feature on mental health.

Foreign scientists have found that it is night owls who suffer from mental disorders more often.

The findings of the study were published in Psychiatry Research.

Disorders in people who like to go to bed after midnight include mental and behavioral disorders (depression and anxiety).

Almost 74 thousand volunteers were analyzed.

It turned out that with the onset of darkness, “night owls” do not feel better, and in comparison with other people, the likelihood of their disorder increased by 20-40%.

There is no exact explanation for this yet. There is a version that the tendency to disorders is explained by the "mind after midnight" hypothesis.

The theory suggests that staying awake after 00:00 increases the risk of impulsive and anxious behavior.

You can avoid problems if you sleep 7 to 9 hours a day.

And if circumstances force you to lead a nocturnal lifestyle, then you need to establish a different sleep rhythm.
