American experts analyzed the issue and identified which group of people most often abuse caffeine.
As it turns out, the first place in this rating is occupied by smokers who suffer from mental disorders.
The corresponding findings were published in the journal Psychiatry Research.
The study analyzed data from 248 people. All of them were smokers who smoked a pack of cigarettes a day. It is also worth noting that some of them were mentally ill.
Scientists said that people with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia consumed caffeine more than others.
Researchers have several theories as to why this happens. The first is that cigarette tar increases the metabolism of caffeine, and more caffeine is needed to achieve the stimulant effect.
The second possibility is that there is a link between high caffeine consumption and adenosine receptors.
Scientists also note that men and women with mental disorders are more vulnerable to all types of addictive substances.
