New research by American experts has shown that excess weight has a much greater negative impact on health than previously thought.

As it turns out, men and women who suffer from obesity or serious weight problems have a 22 percent higher risk of premature death compared to people who are of normal weight.

The corresponding findings of a team of specialists from the USA were published in the journal Population Studies .

The researchers' work reportedly lasted for many years. From 1988 to 2015, they analyzed data from 18,000 volunteers.

Over the years, about 4.5 thousand participants have passed away.

As the results showed, excess weight, which was not there at the beginning but which appeared by the end of the work, was present in 20 percent of the men and women who took part in the experiment.

As a result, their health profile worsened compared to those who had maintained a stable weight over time.

As a result, doctors came to the conclusion that previously up to 3 percent of the US population died from weight problems, but in fact the real number turned out to be 8 times higher.

1 in 6 people died due to problems associated with excess weight and obesity.
