If a person constantly wants to bite their nails, then this indicates problems in the body.

Doctor Ekaterina Demyanovskaya spoke in more detail about this bad habit.

According to the specialist, the need to bite nails, pencils or pens can be a sign of anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. In this case, you need to take tests to be sure of the cause of the problem.

“It is recommended to perform a vitamin B12 test in combination with other B vitamins in order to promptly identify possible absorption disorders,” the Izvestia publication quotes the doctor as saying.

Demyanovskaya also noted that the problem may be related to obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Another reason is dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint. In such a situation, there is not only a desire to bite nails, but also to chew gum, and there may be nighttime grinding of teeth.

How to understand that there is such a problem? In this case, you need to look in the mirror and open your mouth wide. If the lower jaw does not move strictly straight, but to the side, then you need to contact an orthopedic dentist.

In addition, such a habit can be a type of tic that appears in people with high levels of stress and social maladjustment.

The specialist also noted that the habit of biting nails develops in childhood, but most often disappears in adulthood.
