Do You Clean That Filter In Your Washing Machine? Here's What Happens If You Don't

Your washing machine copes well with a mountain of laundry, but have you ever thought that inside it there might be a “secret” element that determines not only the freshness of your clothes, but also the service life of the appliance itself?

We are talking about the drain pump filter - the very part that most equipment owners either ignore or are completely unaware of its existence.

Home experts have repeatedly emphasized that regular cleaning of this component can save you from unpleasant surprises such as stagnant water, unpleasant odors, and even expensive repairs.

The drain pump filter is a small but critically important guardian of your washing machine. It catches small debris: threads, coins, buttons, and even detergent residue that can end up in the drainage system.

If left uncleaned, over time these deposits will form a thick blockage that will slow down the drainage of water, create an ideal environment for bacteria and, as a result, give you a damp “aroma” on your freshly washed clothes.

How often should you pay attention to this element? The ideal schedule is once a month.

But if you have a large family, do laundry daily, or frequently deal with heavily soiled work clothes, sandy beach towels, or pet hair, it may be worth checking the filter every 2-3 weeks.

By the way, modern models of cars are sometimes equipped with self-cleaning systems, but this does not eliminate the need to check the instructions - manufacturers always indicate the nuances of care.

The cleaning process does not require any special preparation.

Start by unplugging the machine—that's safety rule #1. Then grab a flat-head screwdriver, rubber gloves, a soft cloth, and a shallow container for water.

The filter is usually hidden behind a panel at the bottom of the body (for front-loading models) or inside the drum (for vertical models).

Carefully pry the lid, place a container underneath - the remaining water may spill out of the hole. Then unscrew the filter, remove hair, dirt and lint, rinse it under the tap, and at the same time wipe the seat with a damp cloth.

It is important not only to put the part back in place, but also to make sure that it is securely fastened.
