Be careful not to get caught. The most popular tourist fraud schemes in Egypt

04.02.2025 08:36

Unfortunately, there are still scammers operating in Egypt who profit from tourists, including those from Russia, Belarus and other CIS countries.

At the same time, it is not only street vendors, including those selling souvenirs, who try to cheat foreigners, but also taxi drivers and even guides.

Cunning citizens resort to various tricks in order to extract as much money as possible from vacationers.

Taxi

Among the most common fraudulent schemes are taxi rides.

Often in Egypt they turn on a “triple meter”, which means a person overpays three times.

That's why seasoned tourists recommend using Uber or Careem apps.

Restaurants

The problem of overpricing is not uncommon for many local restaurants.

Vacationers should remember to check in what currency the prices are indicated and also carefully study the receipt.

Hotels

Often hotels very persistently try to “foist” a better room (for example, with a view of the sea, mountains, or other beautiful landscape) for an additional fee.

In such cases, tourists are advised to refuse any such offers and demand the booked room.

The scheme with “free gifts” is also widespread, as well as photographs or some other services.

It is worth politely declining or asking about the price in advance.

Excursions

Hotel guides offer expensive excursions.

Often, there are travel agencies located near the hotel, where the same excursion will cost you several times less, and the quality will not be inferior to the hotel one.

To avoid overpaying, visit such a company first.

Compare prices, offered tours, services and facilities, and then decide where and from whom it is better for you to take excursions.

"Mandatory Stops"

Very often, on excursions and even on the way from the hotel to the airport, on the day of departure home, buses make “mandatory stops” at expensive stores.

You shouldn't give in to persuasion to buy goods here at inflated prices, which, by the way, it's better to familiarize yourself with in advance.
