For over 130 years, there have been ongoing debates about how to hang toilet paper correctly. Some say with the end of the roll toward the wall. Others say the opposite, away from the wall.
The debate has been going on since the toilet paper roll was patented in 1891.
Perhaps someone will say that the problem is far-fetched and not worth a damn. But it is not that simple.
Online and offline disputes
For example, particularly observant and sharp-sighted Internet users, having noticed toilet paper in someone's photo or video on social networks, begin to unanimously notify, using foul language, that it is hanging incorrectly.
And so the squabbles begin in the public space, drawing the attention of others. This is the power of toilet paper on the Internet.
And it also manifests itself in everyday life. But not for its intended purpose.
For example, even spouses can sometimes throw a terrible scandal with the mention of all the grievances and all the “sins” of each, and all just because one of them thought that the paper was hanging incorrectly, and the other begins to prove the opposite.
Social survey
Perhaps someone will laugh, but the fact remains: at one time, sociological studies were conducted on the issue of the correct placement of a toilet paper roll.
Do you know what they showed? It turns out that the majority of respondents said that the paper roll should be placed "towards you, with the end out."
It is not known what arguments they gave in favor of this position, but they were unable to convince their opponents that toilet paper should be “away from you, with the end toward the wall.”
What the inventor said
So how should it be? The American businessman Seth Wheeler, who patented the roll at the end of the century before last, can put an end to this question.
The documents registered as Mr. Wheeler's patents for the said roll (dated September 15th and December 22nd, 1891) indicate how Wheeler's invention is to be placed.
In relation to the wall - the end of the paper should hang down in front of the roll. That's the story.
