There are general recommendations for washing clothes, which are summarized in a table with tricky symbols on the label.
Such tags are sewn onto trousers, sweaters, underwear and especially onto expensive wardrobe items such as down jackets.
In general, if you are careful, you can even manually tidy up a down-filled jacket without leaving your home.
But there are cases when it is not possible to save on dry cleaning.
Choosing a dry cleaner
Firstly, if you see a crossed-out basin on the label, then you shouldn’t even try to hand wash it.
And if you see a crossed-out circle, then you have no business going to the dry cleaners.
Secondly, you need to have an idea of the filling of your sweater or other item.
What kind of filler is there?
1. Natural down can be washed even in a washing machine if you choose the right detergent and stock up on balls. But the down will still clump together.
2. If it is down and feathers, then it is better not to take risks and at most wash it by hand in a bathtub or basin.
Again, you need to be careful with drying and filling.
3. Synthetic padding can be washed in the washing machine in water no hotter than 30 degrees, without aggressive detergents, on a “delicate wash” cycle, without wringing or drying.
4. Bio-down is machine washed on the “delicate fabrics” setting in water at 40 degrees, without spinning, but with additional rinsing.
