To keep your down jacket in good condition, you need to follow some rules when washing it. What are these rules?

Wash your down jacket only when necessary.

The first rule is not to wash your down jacket too often. The less often you wash your down jacket, the longer it will last.

Washing can damage the down and feathers that fill the jacket, as well as the fabric and fittings. Therefore, wash your down jacket only when it is really dirty, and not after each wear.

Follow the washing regime

The second rule is to follow the washing instructions indicated on the jacket label.

Usually down jackets can be washed in a washing machine at a temperature of no higher than 30 degrees and a spin speed of no more than 800 rpm.

You can also use special detergents for down products, which gently clean and restore the down.

Do not use bleach, fabric softener or chlorine based products as they may damage the down and fabric.

Prepare your jacket for washing

The third rule is to prepare the jacket for washing. Before loading the jacket into the washing machine, you need to zip up all the zippers, buttons and Velcro, turn the jacket inside out and check for any foreign objects in the pockets.

It is also recommended to place a few tennis balls in the drum to help fluff up the down during washing and drying.

Dry your jacket properly

The fourth rule is to dry the jacket correctly. After washing, do not hang the jacket on a rope or hanger, as this can lead to deformation and sticking of the down.

It is best to dry the jacket in a tumble dryer at low temperature. If you do not have a tumble dryer, lay the jacket out on a horizontal surface and shake and smooth it out with your hands periodically to prevent the fluff from bunching up.

Store your jacket in a special case

The fifth rule is to store the jacket in a special case. When you are not wearing a down jacket, do not put it in a tight closet or bag, as this can lead to a loss of volume and thermal insulation.

It is better to store the jacket in a special cover made of breathable material, which will protect it from dust and moisture.
