8 tricks to rid your home of constant clutter: a note for the housewife

17.05.2023 02:30

If the house is in constant chaos, it is almost impossible to achieve order in it. Literally the next day after cleaning, there will be a mess again.

Sometimes the problem is not the owners' sloppiness, but their... psychological attitudes that contribute to the accumulation of junk. What can be done to correct the situation?

1. Put things in their places - and it will become spacious

Having each item in its own place does not solve the problem of the environment being overloaded with things.

You don’t need to look for where to put or store accumulated souvenirs, magazines, items for hobbies that you no longer do, dusty crafts, etc., but rather reluctantly remove them from your home forever!

2. Hide the unnecessary out of sight

Shoving piles of unnecessary things (out-of-fashion clothes, accessories, pretty jars and boxes, etc.) into closets is also not a solution. Then, when looking for the right item in the closets, you will pull out everything else. And pushing the pile of things back each time is troublesome and time-consuming. This means that chaos will inevitably return.

The surest way to prevent this situation is to throw away unnecessary things from your home.

3. Sort small items into containers

Get into the habit of putting small items in containers. However, this only looks aesthetically pleasing when there are several containers. If there are too many boxes and crates, they start to clutter up the space. So moderation is also required in using containers.

4. Don't throw away, give away

Sometimes throwing away unnecessary things is prevented by the idea that such good things can be given to someone. And so they lie in storage for years, waiting for the hour of gifting, which never comes. Therefore, the question of gifting or throwing away must be decided immediately.

If you know that you won't see the person you're going to give the items to soon, or you're not sure whether they need them, then it's best to put them in a clean bag and put it outside next to a trash can, adding a note: "Given away for free." Whoever needs them will take them.

5. It can be fixed.

The real problem is broken equipment and other household items that you would think could be fixed and put back into use. But you never get around to it, and things lie in closets, on mezzanines, in storage rooms, on balconies as dead weight.

Think about it, life is moving fast, new technologies appear every year.

Once valuable tech acquisitions are turning into bulky junk. Don't be stingy with them, send them where junk belongs.

6. I'll wear it when I lose 5-10-15... kg

Throwing away quality, expensive, but ill-fitting clothes can sometimes be extremely difficult. Many people keep them in the hope that they will lose weight and wear them. However, the process of losing weight is usually slow. And it is unlikely that in a year or two or even more you will want to wear the clothes that have gone out of fashion by this time.

It's better to give them to friends, relatives, or take them to a consignment store now, while they can still be useful to someone.

7. Nostalgia for the past

The sight of individual objects stored as a memory but having no practical use awakens happy moments from a past life in the mind, improves the mood, and sets a positive tone.

Indeed, it is quite justifiable to keep several such dear things in the house. However, it is not worth turning the whole house into a museum of the past.

8. What if you need it?

Life does not stand still. You used to have one set of interests, now another, yesterday you were involved in this sport, now this one.

So bags, boxes and consumables for hobbies and old sports equipment accumulate. What if they come in handy?

Unlikely. Most likely, you will have new ideas and will have to buy something new to implement them. But your savings may be valuable to other people, offer them as a gift or try to sell them on thematic sites. Perhaps you will be able to make money.
